Wild WE Member of the Month Interview with Shanel Evans

Shanel Evans, MyDivaShop ™

Shanel Evans founded My Diva Shop to offer trendy and sophisticated plus-size clothing.

About My DIVA Shop

MyDIVAshop.com is an online boutique that features hot and trendy fashions for women of all sizes. We target original and unique designs, while offering the convenience of shopping at home or anywhere internet connection is provided. Founded in May of 2004, MyDIVAshop.com separates itself from traditional online boutiques by offering trendy plus-size clothing. We place special attention to our plus-size clothing department to ensure that the designs selected are as trendy as regular sizes, while maintaining the sophistication of both the customer and the D.I.V.A. image.

I created MDS on the notion that all women, regardless of body size, status, background and interests are special and have a "D.I.V.A." within. What better way is there to express your personality than wearing fashions that make a statement? MDS aims to provide everyday women with affordable fashions that are original, have a stylish edge, along with the convenience of shopping from your home - avoiding long lines and traffic jams.

Why I started this business

For the past 10 years, I had a successful career as a CPA, which includes working for one of the big accounting firms. However, after years of demanding hours and lack of a family friendly work environment, I developed a strong desire to spend more time at home with my family. My desire to get out of the "Rat Race" reached its peak after the birth of my twin daughters. Already a mother of a 4-year-old daughter, it was time for me to find a career that offered flexibility and a creative outlet. Sounds like a fantasy doesn't it? This fantasy led to the birth of MDS. Opening the boutique was a perfect match for my long time love of fashion, fascination with the Internet, and growing E-commerce trends. Most importantly, it offered the flexibility I needed to spend time with my husband and three D.I.V.A.s at home.

The best part of running My DIVA Shop

I am tremendously motivated that comes from creating "something from nothing". I enjoy the ownership of making decisions that affects the personality of my business. I also love "meeting" tons of new contacts online through networking groups and blogs.

Balance

My husband and 3 small daughters keep most of my free time locked down! Balance can be difficult, so I basically just make it a point to prioritize and take care of the most urgent tasks. I also try and rest when my body needs it. My BlackBerry helps me tremendously - I am able to view all of my email, contacts and appointments in the palm of my hand. It's amazing!

The best part of WildWE

I was introduced to The Wild Women Network about 3 months ago and was immediately attracted to the network because of its energy and inspiration! I love being a part of women-based business networks because women offer a special motivation and nurturing that is very much needed when starting a new business.

Advice for new businesswomen

I strongly encourage new business owners to keep focused and stay around positive influences and people. It is a struggle to stay motivated and focused while maintaining our busy lives but surrounding yourself with positive, like-minded business women is invaluable. Also, don't be afraid to ask for help! My husband and good friends have been essential in the success of my business, so know when to ask for hand when you need it.
